January 20th was a day of great sadness across the country across the US and the world.
In response, a group of protesters in Santa Cruz built a wall that came tumbling down. This performance piece uplifted a community of people that worked on building it, and was witnessed in-person and digitally.
UCSC Theater Technical Director and Artist, Raj Westerberg spearheaded
The idea came out of a discussion with Raj’s friend, Micah Posner, former Santa Cruz City Council and fellow parent at their children’s school, Monarch Community School. Raj shared with Micah a vision he had the night of the election. They decided that with Micah’s community organizing skills and Ray’s set building and artist practice, the “J20 the Wall is Taken Down” began.
This project was inspired by the Monarch Bill of Rights which are based on the International Rights of the Child.
